The fiestas of La Mercè in Barcelona are with us once more, from 21st to 24th September, the last day of which is the main day and a public holiday in the Catalan capital.
This year’s opening proclamation will be given by actor, scriptwriter and director, Leticia Dolera, and will take place on 21st September in Plaça Sant Jaume at 6.30 pm. Two hours later, at 8.30 pm, the RAC 105 concert kicks off in Parc de la Ciutadella where you can dance to some of the best groups and solo artists of the Catalan music world such as Nil Moliner, Animal, Ramon Mirabet and Buhos. The perfect occasion to enjoy the cream of Catalan music in an idyllic setting. And these are not the only concerts on offer on the night of the 21st September: you can also see La Banda Municipal de Barcelona, Balago, Maisha and Nakani Kanté who will be playing at various venues around the city.
The fiestas continue the following day, 22nd September, with a host of spectacles showcasing some of the top talent from Portugal, this year’s guest country. In Parc de la Ciutadella on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, starting at noon, the theatre group Dom Roberto will be delighting the youngest members of the public with their marionettes. In the afternoons, on the same days, from 5 to 7.15 pm, the Cape Verde-born dancer and choreographer, Avelino Chantre and his company will offer a participative workshop of hypnotic African dances. And the music continues in the evening, with concerts by Surma, OBC and La laia, among others. There will also be a firework display from the beach of Barceloneta on Friday and Saturday night at 10 pm.
On 23rd September, among the many shows and concerts on offer, we recommend Ferran Palau, Dr. Prats, Orquestra Sinfònica i Cor del Gran Teatre del Liceu, Pantanito, The Mani-las, Celtas Cortos, Els Catarres and flamenco artist, Maite Martín. And to round off the festivities, on 24th September you can enjoy concerts of traditional songs, “havaneres”, by groups Port Bo, Big Band Jam Session, La Bien Querida and La Plata.
